About Shira Ben-David
I’m an artist and library worker based in Boston, Massachusetts, and a 2021 graduate of Bennington College.
My work explores the complexities, ethics, and motivations of creative practice and storytelling. In Fall 2019 I made a print of a poem I had written about the cleaving of identity that occurs when an artist creates and when an artist’s work is considered complete, and about the futile desire for intimacy through creative expression. I collected and printed a series of non-heterosexual love poems from across history, emulating the research and collection LGBT+ people have done due to our culture and history having been systematically erased. More recently, I’ve begun to question the limitations of narrative through less usual visual form, through creating several calendar-like books of prints whose pages can be matched differently depending on how many pages in each are turned.
In my spare time I love singing, especially opera, playing guitar, and studying languages.
